Oliver Morrison-Chapman, of Buxton, and Rebecca Sharp, of Chapel-en-le-Frith, are the only High Peak representatives to travel to the 23rd World Scout Jamboree next summer.

During their trip, they will take part in a number of activities including a visit to Hiroshima, a programme to raise awareness of global issues and an activity promoting the exchange of cultures.

Buxton Community School pupil Oliver, who turns 14 on Saturday and is a member of 14th Buxton Scouts, said: “I was ecstatic when I found out I was going. I’ve never been abroad before and now I’m going to the other side of the world.”

And Rebecca, an Explorer Scout, who turns 15 on Saturday, added: “I’m really excited because I didn’t think in a million years that I would get picked. It’s a good opportunity to get the message across because not many people know girls can go to Scouts so it shows girls can do exactly the same as the guys.”

Oliver and Rebecca have to raise the money needed to fund the trip themselves and are arranging a number of fundraisers over the coming months.

A bag pack held at Waitrose in Buxton on Sunday raised £549 and thanks are given to the store’s staff and customers for their support.

Another bag pack is taking place at Marks and Spencer, Buxton, on February 22 and Rebecca’s mum Bev is organising a raffle to help. Anyone who can help with prizes can contact her on 01298 813680.
