AN UNUSUAL character was adopted to help attract raw recruits to a forces organisation in Matlock.

The town’s squadron of air cadets were out and about at the recent Victorian Market to encourage other youngsters to sign up.

And with the help of Harry the Hippo they were able to be the centre of attention.

The radio-controlled walking animal, who was there to entertain the crowd during the festive extravaganza, donned the squadron’s flying helmet.

Civilian instructor David Muscroft said: “The 140 Squadron cadets attend the Market every year but this is the first time they have recruited from the animal kingdom!”

Anyone wanting to join the Matlock Air Cadets meet at 6.45pm every Monday and Wednesday at their Hurst Rise HQ.
