Emily Brailsford, of Matlock, said it was lovely to be named Derbyshire’s Inspirational Woman of the Year in the voluntary sector at the Vox Feminarum awards in Derby on Saturday.

The mum–of–three set up Parenting Additional Needs in Matlock three years ago after her son was diagnosed with ADHD, epilepsy and autism spectrum condition.

She said: “It’s grown from being just the one group in Matlock to six groups. And we are now becoming a branch of Derbyshire Carers.”

The non–profit organisation gives parents and carers of children with additional needs support, as well as the chance to share ideas and listen to professional speakers.

The groups also signposts people in the direction of further help.

Emily decided to set up her own group after finding insufficient support for her in the local area.

She said the process of having a child statemented – meaning they have their educational needs assessed – can be ‘dreadful’ for parents.

“When I heard the word ‘statement’ I didn’t know what it meant,” Emily said. “And I didn’t know what an educational psychologist was.”

The Matlock group will meet on Monday, April 7, at ‘The Barn’ next to St Giles Church between 12.30pm and 2.30pm.

There will be a speaker from Autism Outreach and there will be a free creche.
