The man’s next of kin have been informed and a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

IPCC commissioner Derrick Campbell said: “Our sympathies are with the man’s family and anyone else affected by his death.

“Our inquiries are obviously at a very early stage and we will be carrying out a very thorough investigation of all the circumstances.”

A Derbyshire Constabulary spokesman added: “As the matter is being investigated independently we can make no further comment at this time.”
