Lights, camera, action for movies in Matlock park

The park will be the setting for some Hollywood glamour as Matlock calls lights camera action on an outdoor film event.

Maazi Movies in the Park will once again be held in Matlock’s Hall Leys Park this Saturday.

The event, organised by Irfan Shabir, who owns Maazi restaurant, in Matlock, in association with Morclean and Zhivago Jewellery, will kick start at 10am, with the first film in the line–up, Despicable Me, being shown at noon.

The family–fuelled fun will continue at 3pm with Frozen and conclude with Grease at 6pm.

It’s been more than two years since Irfan held his last outdoor movie event in Matlock, which proved to be a success.

“Everybody loved the last one and it had a great atmosphere,” he said.

“It was a fantastic day for everybody – for businesses and the community.

“Everyone had such a great time that lots of people came up to me and said ‘what a fantastic job.”

Irfan wanted to host another film event this year as he plans to open another Maazi restaurant in Ashbourne next year and is unlikely to have the time to do it then.

He continued: “We want to showcase all the goodness of Matlock.

“We’ve got around 30 stalls including businesses such as Indigo and Unpolished Perfection.

“Hopefully we’re going to get people visiting who have maybe not wandered around the various streets of Matlock before and will see what we have to offer.”

There will also be activities for children including inflatables and slides.

After the popularity of Mamma Mia at the last movies in the park event, Irfan chose films that people could sing along to.

He said he was keeping his fingers crossed that the weather would be good.

“You can’t marquee the whole park, so I just hope and pray we get the weather,” Irfan added.

“Local businesses have put time into this and it is being put on for free by the sponsors.

“I’d like to thank the sponsors for making this free event possible and hopefully everyone will come out for it.”
