Bakewell driver caused head–on collision
A BAKEWELL motorist was involved in a head-on collision after losing control of his car on a roundabout, a court heard.
Anthony Mather’s breath sample was over the limit following the 5am crash and he went on to give a reading of 102mgs of alcohol in 100mls of blood, the limit being 80mgs.
But a drink-drive charge was dropped after a calculation found he could have been under the limit at the time of the accident.
Witness Gerald Wharton told police that Mather’s Suzuki Swift approached the roundabout on the Chesterfield to Baslow road at a very fast speed.
He stopped and believed the Suzuki would be unable to negotiate the roundabout but Mather steered sharp left and then right and went under the front of his car.
“There were no injuries to Mr Wharton,” John Bettany, prosecuting, told magistrates at Chesterfield.
Mather, 20, of Yeld Close, Bakewell, admitted careless driving on June 9 and was fined £125, with £85 costs. Five penalty points were imposed on his licence.
His solicitor, Steve Brint, said he drank a moderate amount of alcohol that night and his last drink was at least four and a half hours before the accident.
“He gave a borderline breath test. The blood reading was also borderline and, based on what he had drunk, a back-calculation indicated he could well have been under the limit at the time.
“He approached a roundabout and over-steered and then tried to correct it,” said Mr Brint. He added: “He is an apprentice joiner.”
