By-election result

A FORMER police inspector has been elected to represent Masson Ward on the district council.

Garry Purdy, who has lived in the Matlock area for 36 years, took the seat for the Conservatives in a by-election held last Thursday with 48 per cent of the votes.

Cllr Purdy spent 23 years with Derbyshire police, where he helped to set up Derbyshire Dales Victim Support Scheme.

He said: "I feel extremely privileged and honoured to have been elected, and look forward now to serving the whole community of Masson Ward and to play my part in full with the parish councils of Bonsall, Cromford and Matlock Bath, and the Derbyshire Dales District Council as your representative.

"All residents should feel free to contact me with any issues they might have that concern them, and together with my colleague, Peter Hume, you have my assurance that we will work tirelessly to deal with matters before us."

The results of the election were: Purdy, Conservative, 359 votes; Heaney, Labour, 256 votes; Steadman, Liberal Democrats, 126 votes.

The turnout was 30 per cent.
