A Derbyshire charity is in desperate need of volunteers to help drive its mobile church.

Christian group Church on the Bus offers a safe, friendly and supportive environment for people to meet.

The project began nine years ago in Chesterfield and has expanded into Matlock in recent times.

Volunteer coordinator Keith Hodgson, 70, from Bakewell Road, admitted the service is down to its bare bones.

He said: “We rely on volunteers and have been okay for drivers in the past but are at a point now where we are in need of them.

“We are on the verge of it hampering the work we do in the community. We are there for people who need friendship and support.

“There are hot drinks, food, clothing and spiritual support and prayer if needed.”

The charity runs four different sessions a week - two in Chesterfield and two in Matlock.

It can be found in Chesterfield outside the Town Hall on Monday and Thursday evenings from 7pm.

The bus pulls up in Matlock on Tuesdays in the Sainsbury’s car park, on Cawdor Way, from 1pm-3pm and Thursdays on the Hurst Farm Estate between 10am-12pm.

Keith, who has been volunteering at the charity for four years, has already had some interest and is urging others to follow suit.

“We are in need of two or three more drivers to come and help out for one session a week or fortnightly,” he added.

Applicants must have a full clean driving licence. All those interested can contact Keith on 01629 56214.
