Councillors’ tableau spat
The argument over the swapping of Bakewell’s Christmas tree with a £5,000 nativity tableau rumbles on at the town council.
Cllr John Riley branded it “horrendous” and Cllr Carol Walker revealed an unnamed district councillor, who normally visits the town to do her Christmas shopping, was boycotting Bakewell in protest.
Cllr Walker said there should have been more consultation.
But project leader Cllr Hilary Young said: “Consultation is a wonderful word you politicians use, but it’s a hopeless task. You’re a Conservative councillor on a Conservative council.”
Cllr Young said there had been a “wonderfully mixed reaction” to artist Gordon Gillick’s tableau in Bath Gardens. He added taxpayers only paid £800, with the rest from sponsors.
The council had previously voted for the plan, in principle.
