A blue plaque has been unveiled at Cromford Canal to commemorate the waterway.

The special plaque was put up by Derbyshire County Council after members of the public voted for the attraction to receive the honour.

The canal was constructed during the 18th century and provided an important link between rural Derbyshire and the industrialised Midlands.

Nowadays it is a haven for wildlife and the towpaths are always popular for ramblers.

Patrick Morriss, chairman of the Friends of Cromford Canal, nominated the attraction for the plaque.

Mr Morriss said: “No one disputes the fact that Cromford Canal played a vitally important role in the industrial history of the county.

“It is heartening to see how much public support the canal actually has.”

The blue plaque was unveiled by Derbyshire County Council’s leader Councillor Andrew Lewer.
