Derbyshire: Alarm bells ring over alarm suppliers

editorial image

Trading Standards are warning Derbyshire residents to be aware of unsolicited telephone calls from businesses claiming to offer “free” burglar alarms.

Officers warn that cold-callers have been misleading people into believing that alarms are free and that the business is working with police – which is not the case.

Trading Standards report that callers will try and arrange a home visit, which usually becomes a lengthy and pressurised sales pitch.

A Trading Standards spokesperson said: “The alarms offered may well be free but the cost of maintaining and monitoring them will be very expensive and the agreement can last for many years. False claims are often made about alarms being linked to police stations too.”
