DERBYSHIRE: Conservatives launch manifesto for May council elections

A leading Government minister has helped Derbyshire’s Conservatives launch their manifesto ahead of the county council elections.

Transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin joined Derbyshire County Council leader Andrew Lewer to unveil the Tory group’s manifesto in Matlock on Friday.

The 15-page document lists a number of pledges including:

• another freeze in council tax for 2014 to 2015

• no library closures

• £100m for school repairs and rebuilding

• a new training scheme for 500 adults

• £6m for road repairs

• funding to care for elderly and disabled people

Derbyshire Dales MP hailed the manifesto as “looking forward”.

Cllr Lewer said: “As Conservatives we offer Derbyshire people a competent and capable team with moderate but progressive ideas - this manifesto highlights some of those ideas.

“This county cannot afford to go back to being run by hard-line left wingers harking back to the 1970s.”

Derbyshire County Council has been under Conservative control since since 2009.

Before then the authority had been Labour-led for 28 years.

The county council elections will take place on Thursday, May 2.
