DERBYSHIRE: Fire safety demonstrations

editorial image

Derbyshire County Council and the Fire and Rescue Service have teamed up to hold two fire safety demonstrations later this month.

They are urging everyone to think ‘safety first’ when cooking this month, and following a few simple measures to people safe.

Top tips for cooking include:

- Take care when cooking with oil − it sets alight easily.

- Do not leave cooking unattended − a forgotten pan can lead to disaster.

- If the oil starts to smoke, it’s too hot. Turn off the heat and leave it to cool.

- Use a thermostat controlled electric deep fat fryer. They can’t overheat.

- Avoid children being in the kitchen alone when cooking on the hob.

- Don’t overfill a chip pan with oil − never fill it more than one third full.

- Make sure food is dry before putting it in hot oil so it doesn’t splash.

Group Manager Steve Helps said: “From making pancakes to romantic dining, there are many reasons to don the apron and test your culinary talents this month. But whether you’re a baking beginner or a pancake pro, just a moment’s distraction could turn your kitchen fun into tragedy.”

Community Safety Officers will be demonstrating the dangers of a chip pan from 10am until 2pm on Tuesday 19 February and Ripley Market Place

and on Thursday 21 February at Chesterfield Market Place, opposite BHS.
