Driving down traffic offences in the Dales

More than 70 motorists were stopped and had their vehicles checked as part of a road safety campaign by Derbyshire police.

Officers checked for a range of offences in two locations – at the fire station on Harrison Drive, Wirksworth, and on the A615 at Tansley.

In total, 25 motorists were caught not wearing seat-belts, two were busted using a mobile phone at the wheel, six were speeding, three had illegal window tints, one was driving without the correct licence and another motorist was caught using red diesel illegally,

The checks, which took place from 8.15am to 2pm on Friday, November 9, also saw one motorbike seized for a brake mechanism offence and four vehicles were deemed too dangerous to be on the roads at all.

PC Doug Eyre said: “We are absolutely committed to making the roads across out area safer.

“These checks illustrate that commitment and send out a clear message that dangerous driving – whether that be speeding, using a phone, not using a seat-belt or having defective tyres – will not be tolerated.”

The vehicle checks formed part of Operation Safedrive, the constabulary’s campaign to reduce casualties and maintain road safety.
