Eco-project launched in Matlock

A NEW group which aims to create green spaces for people and wildlife has been launched in Matlock.

Little Green Space is a non-profit project working to build a network of environmentally and wildlife friendly spaces as well as carrying environmental awareness and education work.

Director Richard Bunting said: "We will be working with schools, businesses and local people to transform patches of land which are currently doing little for the environment into fantastic habitats for wildlife.

"Over the past 50 years the UK has lost some 95 per cent of its wildflower meadows and 50 per cent of lowland woods. This environmental damage is now being accompanied by serious changes to the atmosphere. We can all take steps to protect habitats and ecosystems, and to address the unprecedented global threat of climate change."

Little Green Space is currently working at Hackney Leys, a smallholding covering five acres of grassland.

Using traditional and organic methods, much of the land will be maintained as hay meadow, native broadleaved trees will be planted, wild hedgerows managed and dry stone walls rebuilt.

For more information about the project call Richard on 07753 488146 or go to www.littlegreenspace.org.uk.
