Fur protesters claim victory in Bakewell
Animal rights campaigners who are encouraging traders to make Bakewell fur-free say they have convinced a shopkeeper to sign up to their pledge.
Sheffield Animal Friends protested outside Wye Accessories – and say the owners have now said they will no longer stock real fur.
Now the group is upping its drive to encourage other traders to banish real fur from their shelves.
Oliver Dean, one of the protesters, said: "The purpose of the demonstration is to raise awareness of the cruel reality of the fur trade, and hopefully affect the attitudes of those that stock it.
"We don't want to damage the businesses, just to appeal to the conscience of the owners."
The group demonstrated outside the Water Street store last Friday, singing Christmas songs with adapted lyrics.
Oliver added: "It was a great result, but we have found another shop which is selling fur as well, so we started demonstrating there immediately.
"We are determined to make Bakewell fur-free and when we reach this goal we shall be moving on to the next area."
No-one from Wye Accessories was available for comment.
