House burglary is on the rise
A STEEP rise in house burglaries has prompted a police appeal for witnesses in Ashbourne.
In the last two weeks of September, properties in Ashbourne were targeted numerous times by thieves hunting for cash and jewellery.
On Monday, September 17, a house on Willow Meadow Road was broken into and the following day, Tuesday, September 18, between 11.30am and 9.15pm, crooks gained entry to a property on Derwent Gardens.
Between 4.40pm and 5.30pm, on Friday, September 28, a house on Spencer Close was broken into. Jewellery and cash was stolen from all three properties.
Between Friday, September 14 and Sunday, September 30 a number of other properties in the Ashbourne area were broken into, along with some unsuccessful attempts to gain entry.
PC Ian Cooper from Ashbourne Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team said that officers wanted to make the residents of Ashbourne aware of spate of burglaries so that people can ‘ensure that the security on their property is up to date’.
Police also wanted to make it clear that public support is crucial to catching the burglars and would urge the community to report any vehicles or people acting suspiciously to the police.
PC Cooper, who was keen to offer security advice to concerned residents, said: “People can ensure that their property is secure by keeping all windows and doors locked.
“Check that outside lighting is working and any garden bushes that are blocking views to the property are cut back. Please make efforts to ensure tools and ladders are locked away, and not left out in the garden.
“Try not to leave valuables on display and ensure that cash is taken to the bank and not stored in the home.”
