No choice but Costa

editorial image

Derbyshire’s MP Patrick McLoughlin has spoken out to say he would not support a campaign to stop Costa Coffee coming to Bakewell.

The franchise won an appeal in December to open a 54 seater coffee-shop at the former Bennets premises in King Street, Bakewell.

In response, an ‘anti-Costa’ campaign was formed by disgruntled traders and residents.

But Mr McLoughlin has said that he “would not support an ‘anti-Costa’ campaign” despite the fact he would have preferred an independent trader “if there had been a choice”.

He said: “Unfortunately the premises have been empty for well over a year and have not been adding to the appearance or trade of the town.

“Nearby towns such as Ashbourne and Matlock have Costa branches and have still retained independent traders.”
