PCC Alan Charles appoints deputy

DERBYSHIRE’S Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) has announced his intention to appoint a Labour councillor as his £56,000-a-year deputy.

Alan Charles’ proposed appointment of Hardyal Dhindsa, a Derby City Council councillor, is expected to be confirmed by the Derbyshire Police and Crime Panel later today (Thursday).

Mr Charles, who is paid £75,000-a-year in his role, said: “I would like to congratulate Hardyal on his successful application.

“The role of PCC is a big one, with a wide range of responsibilities, and I was seeking someone who would help me deliver on my election pledges and support me in my work.

“I believe we have found that person.

“Hardyal’s previous experience, which includes tackling drug problems and working with Nottinghamshire Probation Trust, plus his excellent community links, will be enormously helpful as we move forward and commission community safety services across the county.”

Mr Dhindsa added: “I am very pleased and honoured to have been successful in my quest to become deputy PCC for Derbyshire.

“It is my home county and I look forward to making a difference for all its communities, so that they feel safe, secure and confident in local policing.

“The commissioner’s role is very challenging and this is a large county to cover.

“I am looking forward to supporting Alan Charles to ensure that local communities have a voice in the policing of their neighbourhoods.”

Mr Charles was appointed Derbyshire’s PCC in November amid concerns about low voter turnout.

His aim is to cut crime and deliver an effective police service in Derbyshire
