SNOW UPDATE: Snow causes disruption across Derbyshire

editorial image

Derbyshire woke up to a blanket of snow this morning after flakes fell throughout the night causing disruption across the region.

A number of schools have closed their doors for the day, commuters have reported problems on the roads and airports have closed runways.

The overnight snow fell with accumulations of up to 10cm in many places and snow is predicted to continue falling lightly through the morning and into the afternoon.

Temperatures will remain around zero on low ground but may stay below zero on higher ground.

Derbyshire County Council has advised people to take extra care this morning as snow has covered ice from last week that remains on many untreated surfaces.

There is also the high risk of ice where snow turned slushy yesterday.

The council had gritted all primary network routes by midnight Sunday and into the early hours of this morning.

Salting of some secondary network routes in the Derbyshire Dales and South Derbyshire was also completed around midnight and early this morning, said a council spokesman.

He said ploughing and salting of all primary network routes was continuing.

Due to the snowfall, the salting of secondary network routes will be confirmed later this morning as primary routes must be kept open.

Road Closures - weather related so far includes:

A6024 towards Holme Moss and the Snake Pass.

Roads not gritted so far includes:

Post Street, Hadfield in the High Peak was not salted due to a parked car preventing the gritter from travelling through. This is on a secondary route.

Glebe Street, Swadlincote was not salted last night due to parked cars preventing the gritter from travelling through. This is on a secondary route.

East Midlands Trains said a full timetable was planned for today. Robin Hood Airport in Doncaster is currently closed and East Midlands Airport runway is closed.
