Street light switch off

Some street lights will be turned off for a few hours each night, councillors decided at a meeting on Tuesday.

Described by Derbyshire County Council’s cabinet member for highways and transport, Cllr Simon Spencer as “a sensible approach to save both carbon and money”, it will see 40,000 street lights turned off between midnight and 5.30am.

A public consultation, in which 842 people commented, resulted 69 per cent in favour of the move. They will not be turned off in town centres, some main traffic routes, areas with sheltered housing, formal pedestrian crossings, subways and enclosed footpaths.

The scheme will be rolled out across the county on an area by area basis over a four year period and residents will be able to comment about the plans for their area.
