Sub-zero camping trip
Cold campers
Despite the freezing conditions, one group of Dales youngsters defied the weather to take part in a January camping trip.
On Friday, January 18, scout troops from 5th Matlock and 15th Matlock Green braved the elements for a weekend camping in Tansley.
The trip formed part of a Derbyshire County Scouts event, the Chilly Challenge, where scouts have to camp outdoors in January.
When the youngsters arrived, their first task was to erect their tents – so they could be sure of a dry place to sleep – before engaging in a snowball fight and tallest snowman competition.
The scouts then faced a gruelling hike over the tops of Tansley before descending into Matlock for a fish and chip supper.
Caroline Shield, assistant scout leader, said, “It was a fantastic camp and hopefully one that scouts will look back on when they’re older and remember forever. After all, not many 10-14 year olds can say they’ve camped in the snow.”
All who participated will be awarded a special Chilly Challenge badge.
