Crash Scene: A damaged wall marks the spot on the A6 near Ashford in the Water, struck by a car carrying five young people.

A TEENAGER was seriously hurt following a car smash on a busy stretch of road.

The 18-year-old was one of five young people in a Vauxhall Corsa that collided with a wall at the side of the A6 main road near to Dukes Drive, Ashford in the Water, at around 9.30pm on Monday.

The driver had taken the bend, lost control and narrowly missed a large road sign before ploughing into the wall at the foot of a row of houses.

Firefighters were called out to the scene from Bakewell and Buxton, along with police and four ambulances.

Hydraulic equipment was used to remove sections of the car after some of the occupants had been left trapped.

Paul Hawker, station manager at Buxton Fire Station, said: “There were two walking wounded and three other casualties, one of which had to be extracted from the car. “The impact they had had with the wall had caused some severe injuries.”

One witness who lives nearby said: “It looked serious, it was a shock to see what had happened. They only just missed the sign and hit the wall.

“The car had spun round and was facing the direction it had come from.

“I saw two people get out who looked okay but there was one in the back and they had to cut the back doors off to get to them.”

Another commented: “I was sat in my front room and I heard the screech then the bang and as soon as it happened I grabbed my torch because I knew it was serious.

“There have been a few people who have crashed here before, we’ve even had them come to rest in the garden. I don’t think it was particularly icy on Monday, but it’s a 50mph road and there’s little time to stop when you come round the corner.”

The 18-year-old, named as Scott Holliday, had been a back-seat passenger and was taken to the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield where his condition has been described as stable.

Another, who had been in the front of the car, suffered serious leg and facial injuries and was taken to Chesterfield Royal Hospital, along with the remaining three who all suffered minor injuries.

Police confirmed that all five of the car’s occupants were from the Bakewell area.

The A6 road was closed off for two hours as police and the fire service investigated the incident.
