VIDEO: Honouring those loved and lost
The streets of the Dales were packed with patriots as those who gave their lives for freedom were remembered.
Wreaths were laid at war memorials, parades were lead through towns and services were held as part of Remembrance Sunday.
Matlock Town Council worked with the Royal British Legion (RBL) Matlock and Darley Dale Sub–Branch once again in 2012 to host the annual Act of Remembrance at Pic Tor, Starkholmes and Hall Leys Park head.
Jim Higham, of Matlock, was in the Army for 22 years and has lead the Matlock parade as parade marshall for at least ten years.
His seven–year–old granddaughter Ruby, of Matlock, joined him in parading for the first time this year as a member of the Brownies.
“She loved it,” Jim said.
“Every year the parade and gets bigger and bigger.
“It’s fantastic.
“We got more people coming to watch it than ever.”
Matlock Mayor, Cllr Peter Wildgoose, was there on the day to honour service personnel.
He said: “It is one of the great honours of my duties as Mayor to host this humbling event and I thank everyone who turned out to take part – both those playing a part in the service and member of the public. I would like to mention in particular colleagues at The Royal British Legion Matlock and Darley Dale Sub–Branch who put so much time and effort into ensuring we can keep this tradition of respect alive.
“The act of remembrance is an event we share in as a nation and I was proud to host the service in Matlock.”
Councillors from Matlock Town Council apologised to any residents who were unable to hear the service due to problems with the PA system.
Darley Dale marked the occasion by hosting a march from Broadwalk, followed by a service at Whitworth Park.
Wreaths were laid in the Memorial Gardens at Matlock Bath and a service was held in All Saints Church, Ashover, featuring music from Ashover Band.
The Wirksworth branch of the RBL paraded from Wood Street, Wirksworth, to St Mary’s Church for a service and in Bakewell there will be a parade from Market Square, followed by the laying of wreaths at memorials in the Square and Bath Gardens.
