Warning over fake vodka
Consumers and shopkeepers have been warned about the dangers of illegal vodka which could cause health problems.
Derbyshire County Council’s trading standards team has issued the warning about illicit bottles of Drop Vodka 70cl.
No bottles have yet been found in Derbyshire but reported sales have spread across the UK and Wales to places including Scunthorpe, Leeds and Wakefield.
It has prompted a national warning from the Food Standards Agency.
Confiscated bottles have been found to contain Propan-2-ol which can cause eye irritation, respiratory problems and skin rashes.
They also contain just 28.6 per cent alcohol when the legal level for a product to be called vodka is 37.5 per cent ABV.
And Drop Vodka falls foul of labelling issues- particularly a lack of its manufacturer’s details for traceability purposes.
Councillor Kevin Parkinson, Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: “Fortunately none of this illegal vodka has turned up in Derbyshire so far but shopkeepers and consumers need to be on their guard.
“Illegally produced alcohol is often sold at a much cheaper price than legitimate brands and can seem like a good deal but it is not worth the risk.”
Councillor Parkinson added: “Propan-2-ol can have serious health effects and I’d urge people not to buy Drop Vodka if they see it for sale.
“Shopkeepers found to be selling illegal alcohol face serious penalties including the loss of their licence.”
