Buxton Town Team is springing into action with three major events in the next few months.
The first is the Big Buxton Spring Clean on Saturday April 12. As well as picking litter, volunteers will be cleaning signs, utility boxes and information boards and seats, removing old string, cable ties and date notices from railings and posts, and weeding.
High Peak Borough Council’s Clean Team will be taking part on the day, and Waitrose are also helping, with staff taking part, and the company is also loaning organisers surplus shopping trolleys to help move equipment and bags of rubbish around.
Enough volunteers have come forward to cover the town centre and main approach roads but more are needed. Anyone who can help should meet at the Turner Memorial at the bottom of the Slopes at 10am.
On bank holiday Monday May 5, the second annual Buxton Spring Fair is taking place with stalls, activities and entertainment of all kinds throughout the town centre from 10am to 5pm.
Volunteer organiser Janet Miller said: “Buxton is a brilliant place, there is a huge amount of talent, skills and energy in the town, far more than you’d expect for somewhere this size. Last year’s Buxton Spring Fair was amazing, there was a real buzz, as we all celebrated what a great place Buxton is, to live or work in, and to visit.”
As well as Spring Gardens, the Crescent, the Slopes, the Market Place and High Street, this year’s event is expanding into the Square and Bowling Green area.
In addition to stalls selling everything from plants to cheese and children’s clothes, other activities promised so far include a climbing wall, artificial cave, donkey rides, massages and three-legged and sack races.
To book a stall, contact Janet Miller on 01298 71041, visit www.buxtontownteam.org, or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
Buxton is also entering the In Bloom competition this year for the first time since 2009, when the town won Gold in the East Midlands region and Silver in the European Entente Florale.
This year’s theme is gold to mark the 50th anniversary of the RHS Britain in Bloom competition.
The main judging is expected to take place in the middle of July when the East Midlands in Bloom team will take a tour around the town.
In preparation for the visit, the local Buxton in Bloom competition will be held.
