Disabled job seekers in north and mid Derbyshire are being armed with a support system to help them find work after the Government shut down specialised factories across the country.

The Government cut funding for 36 Remploy factories including the Chesterfield site, on Sheffield Road, at Whittington Moor, which were originally set up to provide work for those with disabilities.

Closures were part of new plans to get disabled workers into mainstream employment and the regional Remploy office, based in Derby, has now developed a support team that is producing success stories.

Sandeep Sharma, Remploy branch manager, said: “We now have special Remploy advisors based at Job Centres and we provide support to get disabled people into employment.

“We help with each person’s needs and can help with CVs, applications and interviews or for those suffering with long-term sickness and we can put together tailored action plans and try to secure full-time employment.”

Disabled job hunters can arrange appointments through Remploy with its advisors who are based at the Chesterfield and Alfreton Job Centres. Those interested can call Remploy on 0845 155 2700 or visit www.remploy.co.uk.

Chesterfield’s specialised Remploy factory which produced footwear was closed down two years ago after the Government re-focussed funding to get disabled people into mainstream work.

The closure meant about 70 Chesterfield-based employees lost their jobs with Remploy although some took on new jobs when the site was taken over by R Healthcare.

Derby-based Remploy has continued working to overcome barriers and transform disabled people’s lives by providing employment opportunities.

Between April 2013 and March 2014, Remploy has helped 53 disabled people in Chesterfield and Alfreton to get jobs.

Remploy employment chief Sandeep Sharma has revealed how the disabled workers’ support group also teams up with employers and other partners to secure jobs.

The branch manager explained that it helps firms with recruitment issues and companies are pleased to guarantee job vacancies for Remploy clients. Employers seeking advice can call Remploy on 0845 600 2517.
