Traders plan to turn Matlock’s beloved Victorian Christmas Market into a weekend of festive frolics.

Matlock Town Team has collaborated with Matlock Town Council to make this year’s event the biggest ever.

The traditional market will take place, as usual, on the Saturday and Sunday, December 1 and 2, incorporating the official switch on of Matlock’s Christmas lights.

However Wendy Spencer, who owns Little Gem, in Crown Square, has had the idea to extend the weekend to include the Friday night, November 30, as well.

Wendy said: “Last year was the first time I had been here for the Christmas market, and I noticed that after Santa has left the town everyone just disappeared.

“The Victorian weekend doesn’t make a difference to the rest of Matlock because it’s all in the park.

“The idea I came up with was to keep people here.”

All the business owners in the town team will be opening their shops until 8pm, and are encouraging other businesses in town to do the same.

There will also be entertainment including a juggler, magician, choir and band, which will be strategically placed throughout Matlock to encourage people to wonder throughout the town.

Catherine Rawas, community development officer for the town council, said: “It seemed like the ideal opportunity to work with the town team to see that all the traders in the town get the most out of the weekend. We want it to be a really local event.”
