Hardyal Dhindsa elected as Derbyshire's new Police and Crime Commissioner

Labour's Hardyal Dhindsa has been elected as the new Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for Derbyshire.

He takes over from Labour’s Alan Charles, who has been in the role since 2012.

Mr Dhindsa won 78,858 votes to take the seat, ahead of the Conservative’s Richard Bright, Tom Snowdon (Lib Dem) and Stuart Yeowart (UKIP).

Turnout across the county was 23.83 per cent.

Key roles of the PCC include:

• representing and engaging with communities

• setting priorities for the force and preparing the annual Police and Crime Plan

• holding the chief constable to account

• appointing and dismissing the chief constable

• publishing an annual report stating how priorities and targets have been met and other information to enable greater public awareness of police and crime performance in the area.
