'˜Neglected' Meg case is '˜ongoing situation'

The RSPCA says the case of an apparently neglected dog in Derbyshire is an '˜ongoing situation'.

As the Derbyshire Times revealed last week, an online petition has been launched to help the young border collie called Meg.

The petition claims she lives in mud, dirt and puddles outside a Hope Valley house – and calls for her to be given a ‘loving home’.

Last week, an RSPCA spokesman said the charity had been contacted about Meg and an animal welfare officer had been to check on her.

The spokesman added: “We have given some general advice to the owner but are satisfied that the dog is healthy and being cared for.”

When the Derbyshire Times visited Meg’s owner over the weekend, she said she felt threatened as a result of the petition.

We couldn’t ask her any more questions as she told us to leave – otherwise she’d call the police.

Meg was tied up and in a muddy garden.

On Monday afternoon, the RSPCA spokesman said: “This is an ongoing situation and we can’t say any more at this time.”

The petition, which was set up by a Derbyshire woman, states: “All Meg wants is a loving home.

“You can see the love in her eyes.

“She just wants a cuddle and warmth.”

Commenting on the petition – which has so far been signed by 1,500 people – Holly Dickinson said: “I’ve seen this dog multiple times in poor conditions.”

Joan Grey said: “Something needs to be done!”

Valerie Panter added: “The RSPCA are failing this dog and her owner obviously needs help looking after her.”

Commenting on the Derbyshire Times’ Facebook page, Marianne Mccarthy said: “I know the owner and can safely say that Meg is cared for dearly and loved very much.”

Maggie Panteli Michael said: “If the dog was mistreated they would have taken her away straight away but they didn’t because she wasn’t harmed or neglected.”

Selina Bates said: “Someone needs to take that dog off her. How could anyone think it’s OK to let an animal live in those conditions?”

Sam Louise Searson said: “Heartbreaking.”

Dawn Jupp said: “Why have a dog if you aren’t goin to look after it?!”
