A man who was airlifted to hospital after his canoe got trapped under a bridge in the River Derwent in Derbyshire has died, police have confirmed.

The 32-year-old male was canoeing along the river near to Crown Square in Matlock at about 12.45pm on Sunday, January 3, when he got into difficulty.

Police attended the scene together with other emergency services.

He was airlifted to the Royal Derby hospital in a critical condition.
