Lost piece of history back in St John hands

A certificate celebrating 50 years of service for Ilkeston’s St John Ambulance Brigade, which was lost in storage, has been handed back after turning up at a garage clearance.

The certificate was originally presented in 1949 to the Ilkeston Corps but was lost when it was bundled away with other papers.

But when it was found it was handed to IlkestonHistory Society at one of its open days at U-Choose smoothie bar.

It has now been presented to Craig Duff, unit manager of the Ilkeston branch of St John Ambulance .

Chairman of the history society, Alan Edwards said that he was delighted to return the certificate,

The Ilkeston branch was one of the earliest brigades to be set up and now has 20 members doing public duties with youths being recruited from ten years of age.

Craig explained that miners were trained in quick medical responses following accidents. It was from these beginnings that the branch was established in 1898 for public and private events.

The unit currently meets at the Arena Church in Ilkeston on Monday nights at 6.30pmfor youths and 7.45pm for adults.
