I was pleased to read David Barker’s letter (‘We want new market site’) in last week’s Mercury. It is essential that a market is retained in Matlock, preferably with a proper outdoor site such as in front of the Town Hall but, if not, then with an improved indoor market site.
An attractive, light, indoor market, or space for an outdoor one, could have been incorporated into the plans for the Lido site. If it has not been, then all the more reason for a proper site to be allocated.
Markets bring life, interest and variety to a town, attracting both shoppers and tourists, and offer fresh produce at prices the supermarkets won’t match. Many people travel to Chesterfield and Bakewell for the markets. A reinvigorated market would help Matlock thrive and grow.
