Latest figures obtained by the Derbyshire Times show Derbyshire County Council has 1,776 potholes to repair on the region’s roads.

A council spokesman said its highways workers were dedicated to fixing potholes.

“We can draft in additional resources when demand for repairs increases significantly,” the spokesman added.

The council was awarded nearly £100,000 from the Government to fix the county’s potholes in an announcement just before Christmas.

The money will spent over a six-year period.

Transport Secretary and Derbyshire Dales MP Patrick McLoughlin said: “Poorly maintained roads, blighted by potholes, are a menace to all drivers.

“It is vital we have good-quality roads.”

Peter Box, the Local Government Association’s transport spokesman, said: “While helpful, this new money does not bridge the overall funding gap which is increasing year-on-year.”

AA president Edmund King said: “The state of the roads is the number one concern for our members who are fed up with poor surfaces, potholes and persistent puddles.

“It’s also a safety concern for those on two wheels, as well as on four.

“The Government and councils must get this right or risk a backlash from their electorates when roads start to crumble and drivers vote with their wheels.”
