Arc Leisure Matlock’s main pool has opened again – five days after a swimming club official caused its closure by dropping a bottle of wine by the pool.
Matlock and District Swimming Club club hired the pool on Saturday, July 13, for a swimming gala and had provided their own lifeguards and attendants. No district council officials or attendants were directly involved.
As part of the hire agreement, the club accepted full responsibility for the event and agreed to the terms and conditions.
A council spokesperson said: “Unfortunately, one swimming club official made a serious error in taking a glass bottle onto the pool side. Its breakage resulted in the closure of both the main pool and, initially, the teaching pool too.
“While we apologise to swimmers for the closure and resulting inconvenience, we hope they will appreciate the position the District Council has been placed in. Their safety is our primary concern and we could not reopen until we were 100 per cent certain there is no glass in the main pool.”
