With regards to the ladies football team picture (Matlock Mercury, February 23, 2012). It was taken on the Hannages playing field in May 1951, during the well dressing carnival week.
The team was - the gentleman at the back, Vic Rhodes (coach), Margaret Metcalf, Eunice Steeples, Avis Higton, Jeanette Brewer, Jean Moore, Brenda Moorley and the lady Sarah Else.
Front row: Margaret Buxton, Gwen Allen (me), Marie Rhodes, Eileen Gould and Doreen Thornley.
I do remember we played a team of OAPs, who for their age did not pull any punches or kicks.
I can’t recall who won.
I don’t play football anymore, the age gets to your legs! I now concentrate on watching along with my son and brother. We are all big supporters of the Gladiators – Matlock Town, even though we live Ashbourne way. So good luck for the rest of the season lads.
Thank you for the chance for my family to have a good laugh at Nana. Football though is still being played in the family by my eldest granddaughter for Sheffield University.
Thank you for the memories
Gwen Hames (nee Allen)
