A CENTRE at the heart of a community is embarking on a huge fundraising drive.

The Medway Centre in Bakewell is wanting to keep its facilities up-to-date and is looking to pull in around £10,000 to help renovate the kitchen area and make other general improvements.

Centre administrator Margie Stuckey explained: “The kitchen was first put in when the place opened 11 years ago and it’s been adequate, but these days there’s more regulations so we want to upgrade it.

“We want to upgrade our IT stuff as well, and we’ve written to a lot of businesses to ask if they have any old computers they don’t want.”

Their cash target was given a great head start recently after telecoms firm TalkTalk provided initial sponsorship to the tune of £900. Further money was raised through an auction for two VIP tickets for the X-Factor Live Tour at Nottingham Arena next week.

The new Medway Centre was opened in 1999, built to replace the old prefabricated building that had to be demolished in 1992.

It is owned and managed by its members and volunteers.

Over 100 groups use the centre regularly from luncheon groups, tai chi classes to educational courses and club meetings.

The last fundraising drive saw the group raise £7,000 in less than a year to fit the centre with solar panels.

“We are very confident of reaching £10,000,” added Margie.

“We have too many important local groups and this place is integral to some people’s lives. We have over 100 groups using it.

“We have a lovely list of local people who are still involved and it’s very well supported by the community.

“I think by the end of the year we will have a kitchen in place – even if I have to build it myself!”

To help with fundraising, a table top sale at the centre is planned for March 10 from 10am to 3pm.
