No need for over cautious limits

Speed Reduction: Local authorities are considering reducing the speed limit on rural roads from 60mph to 40mph, like here on the A621 Baslow to Totley road after a series of fatal collisions in the county.

Have your say

I noted in one of your recent issues a proposal to reduce the speed limit on certain Derbyshire roads to 40 mph.

I would personally say to this proposal an emphatic NO! as someone who commutes to work on some of these routes. This would turn already long days into long and exceptionally tedious days with the added danger of incredible frustration.

In addition to this I would note that for recreation at weekends I ride a motorcycle on some of the other roads mentioned.

I would not like this somewhat relaxing therapeutic past time be completely ruined by over cautious speed limits and I suspect there are many other motorcyclists who would agree with me.

Perhaps road safety campaigners should concentrate on educating drivers and other road users to be competent rather than imposing slow driving speed limits where driver/ road user incompetency is not addressed.

Finally may I suggest all drivers at some stage try two wheels of some description on the road -being vulnerable on roads may teach them something about consideration for other road users.
