Staff and pupils at Highfields School, Matlock, have congratulated their long-serving lollipop man on his eightieth birthday.

Peter Vale has been keeping children at the school’s lower Starkholmes site crossing safe for about eight years.

The lollipop man said: “I have really enjoyed this job. The students start crossing the road with me in year 7 and I soon get them trained in road safety and never have a problem with them again. The kids are great.”

Assistant head of Highfields Sheila Laming said the school hugely appreciates Peter’s safety role as the crossing patrol man outside its Starkholmes site.

Peter has had strong ties with the school for over 20 years after his children studied there.
