A COMMUNITY venture to revamp Matlock Bath Pavilion is gathering pace – after more than 200 people pledged support for the scheme.
The grand building has been taken over by a group of residents which will oversee the £2.5m renovation and restora-tion plan, and then run the building as a Charitable Trust.
The Pavilion is in a major state of disrepair but the group is hopeful that all the work will be completed within four years.
Chairman Gregor Macgregor said he was delighted that 201 people had signed up to the group.
He added: “We are very happy with this early progress in signing up member of The Friends of the Grand Pavilion group.
“When going around both Matlock Bath and Cromford, I am really heartened by both the level of knowledge of, and support for, what we are doing.”
The work is set to transform the Pavilion in to a multi-purpose community facility incorporating an arts and entertainment centre.
This will include restoring the main hall to its former glory as a performance space for local and touring theatre productions.
The hall will also be used for table-top-sales, antique fairs and pop concerts.
Members are set to apply for grants and will be hosting fundraising events – kicking off next month with a day of music in The Fishpond pub.
Several bands will be playing on the two stages in the venue on July 16.
Mr Macgregor said: “Another great factor of our success is the number of people who are adding donations to their membership fees.
“A quarter of what people have given us has been in the form of extra donations.”
He added: “A high membership will help enormously with the funding bodies that we will be approaching.
“These bodies will provide a major part of the funding needed to renovate the Grand Pavilion.
“It is one thing to get people to sign a petition. It is a wholly greater commitment when people are willing to donate to support our project. This is recognised by the funding bodies.”
Anyone wanting to join the group can sign up online at www.thegrandpavilion.co.uk or contact Mr Macgregor at: Masson Cottage, Upperwood Road, Matlock Bath. Telephone 01629 55088.
Individual membership is £10, a family membership is £15 and concessions (students, OAPs and unemployed) is £5.
