Pictures capture the force of Derbyshire storm

Derbyshire Times’ readers inundated the paper and our website with frightening pictures, as shown, capturing the damage and power of the storm which took down trees, pylons and chimneys and caused long traffic delays.

Gales at around 6pm, on Wednesday, took down a large tree had been blown into Matlock Road, at Walton, partially blocking the road. Traffic was backed up until a man used a chainsaw to cut it up and clear the road.

Trees were downed on the A615 at Wessington, Barlow Lane, Dronfield, Pilsley Road, Danesmoor, South Wingfield Road, Alfreton, and Station New Road, Old Tupton.

A massive tree was also uprooted at Chesterfield’s Mary and All Saints’ Crooked Spire Church.

A telegraph pole carrying power and telephone cables in Beresford Lane, Wooley Moor, was also brought down by the heavy winds at around 6.30pm, on Wednesday.

Firefighters dealt with a chimney which collapsed near the Regal nightclub, Ripley, near the town centre.

Other badly affected areas included Whatstandwell, Tansley and Buxton as well as Chesterfield’s Queen’s Park.

The Met Office has forecast a mainly dry night with some clear spells developing, allowing temperatures to fall.

Winds should ease later in the night giving a chance of frost, according to the Met Office.
