The former Post Office on Market Place Wirksworth could become a new wine bar.

A new wine bar and eatery has been planned in Wirksworth with the aim of restoring the former post office to its historic glory.

Owners of the property have applied for planning permission to change the use of the old Post Office on 5 Market Place, Worksworth in a wine bar, with hopes of stripping out the 1980s Post Office decor and improving the appearance of the building.

Philip Calladine of Duffield Road, Derby said he intended to “change the use of the former post office into a small independent Bistro/wine bar catering for local people”, using local produce for both drinks and food.

He added: “The extent to which we wish to change the front shop premises, we hope will imropve the appearence and the practical use of space while still retaining a very traditional look that will be in keeping with the rest of the property.

Housed in a grade-II listed building, the winebar will have a bare-wall interior and restored facade.

Mr Calladine bought the property in December 2014, after the Post Office closed last August.

He has been working with the Heritage and Conservation Authority to plan an appropriate restoration of the intereior and exterior for his new wine bar, Mercia, which will have a classic look and incorporate an authentic range as an added feature.
