Thirty pupils from schools in the Bolsover district will be flying out to Namibia this summer to install a playground, trek across the desert and camp outdoors.

This week students and staff from Stubbin Wood School, Shirebrook, are swimming 2,816 lengths or 21 miles, the equivalent of the English Channel, in the school’s new hydrotherapy pool.

Nathan Webber, the pool manager, said: “We’re giving ourselves just a week to complete the total number of laps. We were going to do it over a longer period of time, but we just want to get it done and accept the challenge.”

Five pupils from Stubbin Wood will be participating in July’s trip to Africa, as will seven students from Shirebrook Academy and teaching staff.

Academy students have raised money through various events including bag-packing, washing staff cars and hosting tuck shops for fellow pupils.

Eight members of the academy’s science department boosted funds for the trip by taking part in the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge at the beginning of this month.

Six pupils from Heritage School, Clowne, are tasked with raising £1,500 each for the trip to Namibia and have been organising events.

Their next big push is a fun day at Clowne Community Centre on Saturday, April 19, running from 10am until 5pm.

Attractions at the fun day will include an Easter egg hunt for young kids, Easter hat competition, tug of war, pony rides, balloon modelling, tarot card reading, the Worksop Army Cadets and various stalls. Raffle prizes will include an Easter egg hamper, meal for two, horse ride and gym voucher.

Students from The Bolsover School and Frederick Gent School, South Normanton, will also be joining the trip to Namibia.
