A YOUNG bookworm was presented with a top prize after completing a reading challenge.

Benjamin Bounds, from Summer Lane, in Wirksworth, was awarded a Nintendo Wii by Derbyshire County Council leader Andrew Lewer, at a presentation ceremony in Wirksworth Town Hall.

The six-year-old was awarded the prize for reading six library books.

The council will be running the reading challenge again in its libraries in the summer, over the school holidays.

Anyone aged four to 12 is invited to take part in the Circus Stars themed event by reading six library books.

Benjamin is one of 6,000 young people in Derbyshire who successfully completed the last reading challenge.

Everybody who finished the challenge was entered in the prize draw and his name was pulled out.

Cllr Lewer said: “Reading is a vital and enjoyable skill and we should all do what we can to encourage it among the county’s youngsters. Joining the challenge could help inspire a life-long love affair with books.”
