Festive fun was had by all at a vintage railway.

Father Christmas was on track for a top weekend at Steeple Grange Light Railway in Wirksworth.

Families flocked to the attraction’s annual event which saw youngsters enjoying train rides in to Santa’s grotto.

Children received a present from Father Christmas and soup, hot and cold drinks and snacks were also available.

Volunteer John Woodward said: “People came from far and wide and figures show that over all it was as busy as last year’s event despite the rain on Sunday.”

He added: “We had lots of good comments and plenty of regulars came along and said it was up to its usual standard.”

Fears had been raised that the event would not go ahead after thieves stole an expensive generator during a break-in at the railway.

But an anonymous donor came forward to provide new equipment and ensure the festive extravaganza went ahead.

Established in 1985, the railway is an 18-inch gauge line built on the trackbed of a branch of the old Cromford and High Peak Railway, now the High Peak Trail.
