GASTRONOMIC greatness is rarely associated with school dinners, but one high-flying school in our region has topped the list when it comes to lip-smacking cuisine.

Derbyshire County Council recently held its annual awards to recognise the work of the region’s catering staff in primary and secondary schools, with the overall winners named as Fritchley CE Primary School.

Headteacher Phil Bateman said: “Nicki and Bernadette [the cooks] are absolutely passionate about their job and this award is for them.

“It shines through in the food that they serve to the children.

“They are always willing to go that extra mile and the meals are just fantastic.

“We are quite a small school but they cook meals for export, meaning they are taken out to other schools. They cook for about 150 pupils every day. It’s quite an achievement.”

Hundreds of schools took part in the competition and were assessed on their performance during the lunch hour.

They were assessed on the quality of food, service, food presentation, customer care, hygiene, health and safety and kitchen management skills.
