Scientist stands up to disease

A Matlock scientist is joining forces with a national campaign in the fight against cancer.

Huw Thomas, who attended Highfields School,is now a senior research associate at the Northern Institute for Cancer research at Newcastle University.

The 44–year–old is now is urging people to help raise funds for vital research into the disease as part of Stand Up To Cancer, a campaign run by Cancer Research UK and Channel 4. The campaign is uniting scientists, celebrities and communities to generate funds and raise awareness.

Huw said: “We are calling on men, woman and children across the East Midlands to Stand Up To Cancer by helping us raise money for vital research.

“We need everyone to join us and stand shoulder to shoulder in the fight against a disease which affects one in three people in the UK at some stage in their lives.”

A free fund–raising pack is available with lots of great ideas on daring ways to raise money at home or at work.

There is also a range of Stand Up To Cancer t-shirts and hoodies available in Cancer Research UK shops, as well as accessories such as badges, key rings and travel mugs.

There is a Stand Up To Cancer wristband at a cost of £1 which can be bought from Cancer Research UK shops, Tesco and TK Maxx.
