Derbyshire County Council’s leader has welcomed news that the 2012 Olympic Torch Relay is coming to Derbyshire – and is urging people to nominate local torchbearers.
Cllr Andrew Lewer said: “This is really exciting news. The spotlight will be firmly on Derbyshire in the build up to the Olympics next summer.
“In a little over a year’s time, the iconic Olympic flame could be passing down your street – with the whole world watching.”
The Olympic flame will start at Land’s End and be carried for 70 days by torchbearers on its way to the opening ceremony in London.
The search is now on for 2,000 torchbearers who will each carry the Olympic flame for about a mile. Nominations close on June 29.
