A shop owner was in for a shock when he uncovered a valuable Victorian treasure.
Matthew Hibbs, owner of Magpie on Dale Road, was stripping the walls of the shop last week when he uncovered the Minton tiles.
He said: “We closed to sort out our electrics and behind the walls we could see Minton tiles. They’re from the 1870s, they’re worth a fortune.
“Everyone who’s been in since has said how impressive they are. We’re definitely going to leave them as they are.”
Minton and Co were the most famous tile manufacturers of the Victorian era. Their tiles were used in many prestigious buildings, including the Houses of Parliament and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
