Experts at the Met Office said some areas have seen accumulations of two to five centimetres overnight.

A spokesman for the Met Office said: “There may be further localised accumulations of several centimetres before the snow becomes lighter and patchier later this morning.

“Total accumulations of ten centimetres or more, including that already fallen, are possible over hills.”

The county is also under a severe cold weather alert.

Daytime temperatures will struggle to exceed 1C in many towns and villages across the area today.
